FW: Airtel Claims 2M 3G Customers; Launches HD Gaming, Enterprise Plans

Airtel Claims 2M 3G Customers; Launches HD Gaming, Enterprise Plans

Facebook

Airtel has said in a statement that it has now reached 2 million 3G customers, a little over three months after it began its 3G rollout in the city of has launched High Definition gaming on mobile for its 3G customers. The HD games are touted to be console-like games with touch interface, motion sensors, enhanced 3D graphics and music special effects, optimized for high-end smart phones, and are available on Airtel Live 3G WAP portal. It has also launched special 3G tariff plans for Enterprise customers. We have asked Airtel for details and will update the post when we hear from them.

Games on Offer

On offer are 25 HD game titles including NFS Shift Super, FIFA2010, The Sims 3, NFS Undercover, Final Fantasy, Fight Night Round 4, Burnout, Command and Conquer, Dowbtown Texas Holdem 09, Facebreaker, Fifa Manager10, Gauntlet, Gijoe, Risk, Robin Hood, Wolverine, NFS Carbon, Tomb Raider Underworld, and EACricket10.

Android-unfriendly

We tried accessing the portal from a Nexus One but were unable to get a listing of the games. We could only see a banner to download NFS Sift, clicking on which linked us to a Symbian file(.sis) from Nazara.com. So clearly, Android has been left out; Android phones have fast processors, high end graphics hardware and HD screens. iPhone and Windows Phone 7 are out of the question because they follow a different app ecosystem, and are closed.

When we tried browsing the same site from a Nokia E71, we were able to see the game listings, however, no pricing has been specified for HD games. We faced some issues regarding the billing for the games, and we’ve sought clarification from Airtel.

So, which phones are these games meant for? Well from the link that we received trying to download the game from Airtel’s WAP site indicates that these are meant for high-end Symbian phones like the Nokia N8 and E7. Although the Indian market is at a nascent stage when it comes to smart phones, high paying 3G service users are the most likely ones to use them.

3G Games?

Also, a question comes to our mind, that why these games are listed under the 3G section, when they are not multiplayer games requiring constant net connectivity?

Airtel’s gaming section also features regular single player games like DLF IPL, Harry Potter, Avatar, Ferrari GT, Medal of Honor, Prince of Persia, Tetris Revolution, 3D Tower Blox and others. Some multiplayer games are also listed, including Cricket Bash, Pet Wars, Housie, Word Master, Tic-Tac-Toe, Cricket Mania, Hangman and Teen Patti. While single player regular games are priced at Rs 99, multi player games are available at Rs 10 per day.

Though, I am little doubtful on the 2Mn no, whether these customers use mobile internet. I think this 2Mn would be customers hooked onto 3g netowrk and making voice calls. But good lead by airtel in launching HD games, no other operator has still talked about the same yet. Also, all the games mentioned seem to be high-end heavy size games, obviously customer would find it difficult to download on 2g and 2.5g networks. I am sure, this is why these games found their placement on airtel’s premium 3g deck.

Complete farce, a statement to make sharemarket comfortable, enforcing your 3G to existing customers, without any costs, choking their network doesn not classify to be a 3G connection.

Statements liek these need to be verified and autheticated by TRAI and SEBI as they are misleading.

Hope they are all awake, or are in a Raaja mode.
